My top 5 tragic backstories in One Piece

Like a ton of anime and manga, the characters in them suffer from a super tragic backstory that can still haunt them even as the years go by. And One Piece is no exception. Almost everyone of the good guys have suffered from a traumatic past. And so, sorta stepping away from my paintings for an entry, I decided to list my top 5 tragic backstories from One Piece. Yes, there are other anime with characters with sad backstories, and I might do ones for those some day, but, for now, I'm doing the ones for One Piece. And so, let's get started and I hope you all like these.
5. Robin:
See the source image
Starting us off is the past of Nico Robin. We don't know anything about her dad, but her mother left the island of Ohara when she was still a baby and left her with her aunt and uncle who treated her poorly. This also led to Robin eating a Devil Fruit at some point and this caused the other kids around her to hate her and pick on her. But Robin spent most of her time reading and going to the library there, gaining knowledge of the world. This all changed when she met a giant named Saul who washed up on the island. They became friends until Robin told him where he was and Saul knew that the government was coming to destroy the island due to the archaeologists there doing illegal research on the world. This led to her mom coming back and being killed in front of her as the island was being obliterated around her. But admiral Aokiji let her escape due to him feeling kinda bad about Saul being killed, but told her that if she caused any trouble, he'd be the first to go after her and kill her. But, the government knowing about Robin still being alive made them place a bounty on her head and making everyone think she was dangerous. This led to her going on the run for 20 years and being betrayed everywhere she went.
4. Franky:

The Straw Hat's cyborg shipwright Franky has had a bit of a funny, but mostly devastating past. Being thrown overboard by his parents at a young age, Franky ended up being saved by a man named Tom in Water 7. There, he met Iceberg and the two of them became apprentices of Tom. That is until the world government decided to trial Tom for creating the ship belonging to Gold Roger. He and Iceberg worked together with Tom to then construct the sea train, which Tom said he'd make in exchange for being pardoned. All the while, Franky was constructing his series of miniature battleships called the Battle Franky series. Once the sea train was completed, their lives took a turn for the worst when Spandam stole the Battle Franky series and used them to frame Tom, Franky and Iceberg and made everyone in Water 7 think they were trying to kill everyone there. This was all a plot for Spandam to acquire the blueprints to the ancient weapon "Pluton." Franky even tried to stop this and attacked Spandam, but this only made Tom stop him and he told Franky one last think before being taken away. But this didn't stop Franky who decided to stand on the track of the train and try to stop it, which went about as well as you'd expect. This not only destroyed Franky's body, but changed his character from that day onward.
3. Sanji:

When it comes to the Straw Hats having families, Sanji's is by far the worst. Having a loving mother who died when he was still a child, he had arguably one of the worst anime dads ever with Judge Vinsmoke who, because Sanji hadn't inherited his drug when he was born, decided to lock Sanji in a dungeon and decided he would rather have Sanji die than be part of his family. This is until a massive attack broke out in which Sanji was able to escape. Mainly due to his sister helping him. This led to Sanji sneaking onto a ship and learning about the All Blue, which he decided he would find.
2. Brook:

Coming in close to number 1 is the musician for the Straw Hats. While this skeleton might seem like one of the funnier members of the crew, his past is honestly pretty heartbreaking. While still technically alive, he was with the Rumbar who were all musicians. And they met a baby whale one day who began to follow them until they entered the Grand Line where they tried to make him stop following them because they knew it would be too dangerous. They did eventually manage to get him to stay and they promised to come back some day. This would be hard for them though as the captain of their ship caught a disease that a few of them began to catch. This then led to them splitting up with the infected staying and dying and the rest, now led by Brook, to keep going. Brook himself became the captain of the new group and ate the Soul-Soul fruit at some point. That changed again though when they were attacked and a lot of them were either dead or waiting to die with the enemy's weapons having poison in them. The Rumbar pirates then began to make one last song together for Brook to deliver to Laboon, the whale, once he had been resurrected by the fruit. And then he had to watch as the crew all fell dead, one by one.

And the number 1 tragic backstory is One Piece is... Chopper:
See the source image
And finally at number 1 is the doctor of the Straw Hats, Tony Tony Chopper. Definitely one of the most  tragic backstories in anime I've ever seen. As a reindeer, Chopper was born with a blue nose and was an outcast in his herd who would be violent with him. He also ate a Human-Human Devil Fruit which made him aware to being able to stand and talk like a person. This also made him an outcast to people as well. This led to him being a lonely character who was hated by everyone he met. That is until a doctor named Dr. Hiuluk found him and befriended him. He helped inspire Chopper to be a doctor as well as understand what a friend was. That is until Hiuluk was about to die of a sickness that was incurable, but Chopper, after thinking a skull and crossbones in a book was similar to a pirate flag which Hiuluk showed him and told him was a symbol of strength, showed a mushroom that he thought would help heal him. This caused Chopper to fight the reindeer who kicked him out as the mushroom was somewhere beyond their territory. Chopper did win, but he was beaten and horribly and almost killed. And even though Hiuluk knew the mushroom was poisonous, he was so touched by Chopper risking his life to save his that he ate it. But then Dr. Kureha told Chopper about what the mushroom really was which devastated him and he tried to save Hiuluk but then he committed suicide by blowing himself up in front of the Drum Kingdom castle. And all this was happening when Chopper was still technically just a child and he had to go through all this trauma. It's impossible not to feel sorry for this poor reindeer every step of the way as we learn more about his past. And all that is why I think Chopper has the most tragic backstory in One Piece. And so, everyone, those are my top 5 most tragic backstories in One Piece. Thank you all for reading and please comment down below to tell me what you think, and if you like One Piece, please comment to tell me who you think has the most tragic past.

My paintings of Ed, Edd N Eddy characters

So, continuing with my paintings of characters from different shows I liked as a kid, I have painting of characters from Ed, Edd N Eddy. I will admit, some of the quality of the show has died down a little bit for me. I've recently been watching some of the episodes online and it's not exactly as good as I remember it being from years ago. But I still find it really enjoyable and I'm really glad that it still holds up mostly. And I'm glad I got to watch a lot of great shows when I was younger as well and so it's nice to have that nostalgia feeling nowadays. And so, yeah, this show, while far from perfect, is still really good and I'm glad to know a lot of people out there like it too. And so, here they are and I hope you all like these.

My paintings of Danny Phantom characters

So, now we're continuing with paintings of old childhood shows of mine, we're moving on to Danny Phantom. I remember really liking this show when I was younger and I still really like it. One thing is that it's obviously very entertaining and fun to watch and it's a fun concept. And I also like a behind the scenes fact. The fact that it was created by Butch Hartman, the same person who created The Fairly Oddparents, and that's really cool, and you can definetly tell that it has his style by looking at it. And that's cool to think about. But the show is still really cool and fun to watch. And so, here they are and I hope you all like these.

Soul trailer

So, everyone, we got the second trailer for the next Pixar movie that'll be coming out later this year, Soul. And, while I don't think the first teaser impressed me all that much, this one did. I'm still not the biggest fan because there's some things that I'm wondering about, but this film does really look nice. I'm hoping it's an improvement over Onward, which was good, but not anything very special. And it looks like that's what this is. We're getting a better idea about the story and there's some really creative looking animation here. The one thing I want to point out though is that this is kinda reminding me a tiny bit of Coco. Just by watching this, I got the idea of Coco and some things are reminding me of it, but I still have faith in the film and I'm still looking forward to it like I always am for these Pixar movies. And so, here it is and I hope you all like this.

Second Black Widow trailer

So, yesterday, we got the second and most likely, last trailer for Black Widow. And, I gotta say, this trailer was much better than the last. It's made me more excited because it looks like the action is gonna be somewhat more creative than some other M.C.U movies and it shows some pretty interesting discussions between the characters. And we obviously got more info on the plot. We also see more of Taskmaster and we him using some of the other Avengers moves like Black Panther, Cap, Hawkeye and Spidey. It looks really cool and I can't wait to see him fully in the movie. And so, here it is and I hope you all like it.

Onward

And so, everyone, we've arrived at the first Pixar movie of the 2020's, Onward. From the trailers at least, I wasn't getting insanely excited for this film. I obviously was as a Disney and Pixar fan, but not  as excited as I was for other Pixar movies. And the trailers were making me think that this was gonna be a pretty good, but not amazing Pixar film. And in the end, yeah, that's exactly what I thought. I definetly thought this film was good and likeable, but there were some things I wasn't a fan of. But, let's get into the story first and then I'll get into my thoughts afterwards. And, like always, I'll be doing a non spoiler section part first and then I'll get into all the spoilers. So, what's the story? In a world with magical creatures and a whole bunch of fantasy elements, there's an elf family with the youngest being Ian, who's now's 16 and is trying to open up more to life and get more popular. But this is also a world like our own where it had an older way of doing things before and now it's relying a lot on technology and things like that. His older brother though, Barley, is trying to still have a bit of the past left around but constantly gets into trouble for it. That is until their mom shows them a staff belonging to their dad who passed away. This, along with a spell with it, shows that there might be a way to bring him back for one day. And Ian is the only one who can do it. But the gem they use for it breaks before they can finish it. This leaves only his legs and nothing else. So, Barley suggests going on a quest to find another Phoenix Gem to finish the spell but they only have 24 hours to do it or else he'll vanish completely. And that's where I'm gonna stop there. So, from that setup, you might think that this sound kinda familiar. And it does. The first two acts of the movie I thought were very formulaic. It's basically watching Ian and Barley going on this journey and while that's not bad, I wanted more. Because from how the movie starts and shows you that setup, you basically know where it's gonna go and, yeah, it does follow a formula and especially one that Pixar's done before. And, aside from the last third, that does add some genuine heart to it, the first two thirds are just going through a story that we've seen a ton of times. But that's not to say this is a bad movie, it's not. The animation is obviously spectacular and the characters, while not all that interesting, are still likeable. I would say my favourite character was probably Corey. This manticore who has this tavern and is kinda losing it after she meets up with Ian and Barley. She was really funny and the voice cast all around is fantastic. And there are some emotional parts that I thought were really well done. Some of the emotional moments didn't really hit for me and it was kinda weird when some moments happened. But the emotional moments that hit do hit pretty well. And, again, like I said, the last third of the film was definetly the best part of the film for me. With the eventual resolution and what the characters choose to do. That stuff was really well done and really emotional.  But again, the whole leading up to that was stuff we've seen before and there's not as much jokes as I would have liked. Some jokes don't really land and the pacing is kinda too slow. And the actual characters themselves aren't the most interesting and so it wasn't all that fun following them around on this journey. Which isn't something I like to say about Disney and Pixar films, but this just isn't anything special by their standards, which is a shame because their last film, Toy Story 4, was absolutely amazing and so I was hoping this would subvert my expectations because I wasn't all that impressed by the trailers. I was still excited, but, from watching it, it's definetly good and it has some true stand out moments, but it's far from the top 10 Pixar movies ever. I'm probably sounding a bit too harsh on it, 'cause it's still enjoyable, but I was expecting more from this. But, while it does have a slow pace, the stuff that works in this does still work pretty well and overall, like I said, I'm glad I saw it. And I'm sure a lot of people will really like it. And I'm sure the ending will have people liking it more like it did for me, but, even though I'm glad I saw it this one time, I'm sure I'll see it again at some point, but it's not really gonna be something I'll want to see immediately. So, yeah. I know that was kinda vague and I was mostly talking about how it wasn't that special, but I don't think I can truly talk about this movie properly until the spoiler part. And so, I'll just finish up this part. Overall, the film is definetly very formulaic and some of the emotion the film is trying to convey doesn't exactly land, but I would say it's still a good film that at least made me happy to see it and I'd totally buy it on DVD to add to my collection. So I would recommend it, just don't expect it to be one of the best Pixar movies ever. And so, everyone, thank you all for reading and please comment down below to tell me what you think.
Spoilers:
Okay, so first off, that whole board game thing that Barley had, I liked how they were setting it in the past and I liked how it was still something that someone his age would have and so it helped him figure out about the Phoenix Gem. And then once the spell that Ian is casting gets interrupted, he and Barley decide to get I by using some book about the game to help them and help Ian practice new spells. That was pretty cool idea although kinda weird that it was from a board game. Also, that whole opening with Ian talking to those kids and trying to invite them over reminded me a little bit of Peter Parker, which is kinda fitting considering that's who Tom Holland is playing in the M.C.U and so it felt like he could really pull off. But through the entirety of the opening, I was sorta having a hard time feeling connected with them. They show that they try, but I just wasn't feeling it. But then we also see that they're using a dog leash to move their dad's legs around after the spell fails. And then we just get the journey going and it's basically just different antics happening like trying to fool some police with magic, some trouble at a store, meeting Corey and running from the police. I did enjoy the scene with Ian and Barely's mom and Corey in the store trying to get the sword. That was pretty funny. And then, when Ian and Barley begin to go down that river with them on that big Cheese Puff, we get that emotional scene when Barley reveals he didn't go in to see their dad as he was dying, and, yeah that was pretty emotional and I did feel for him there. But then we kinda get a clichéd moment when it's revealed the end of the trail leads them back to their town and Ian yells at Barley. That was honestly just kinda clichéd and unnecessary. But then he then realises that Barley was sorta the one in his life that always sorta acted like he one he needed. That's one of the emotional moments that I feel didn't work. The fact that it's kinda random is weird and I didn't really feel much of anything when it happened. And then Barley realises that the Gem was in that old fountain that he was always protecting. Again, that was something I saw coming, but then it unleashes some dragon thing made out of rubble from around them. That was kinda strange, but I still thought it was cool. And then Ian begins to stall the dragon because he feels Barley should be the one to speak to their dad so he can say goodbye for real, and, yeah, that was really effective. I liked that part a lot. With Ian being trapped and seeing Barley talking to their dad and then he vanishes. That was really well done and I really liked it. Barley then even tells him what he said and that was really touching. And then the movie end with that policeman their mom likes being like old centaurs and Ian making friends with the kids at his school, along with doing magic more regularly. And so, yeah, that just kinda ended on a note that I sorta saw coming. And, for the film overall with that, yeah, I liked it fine, it just didn't hit me in a resonance that other Pixar movies have and I'm not sure if it's one I'll want to check out regularly. But it still had me entertained enough and there were some moments here and there that were nice to watch. So, I would recommend seeing it as a Pixar fan. And so, that's the spoiler section of Onward. And so, everyone, thank you all for reading, I hope you all liked this and please comment down below to tell me what you think.
